International research shows the importance of good leadership for both improved school performance and student outcomes. 1

However in New Zealand, emphasis on the individual school as the administrative unit which drives improvement has not been met with the systemic support needed for ongoing leadership development.2 School principals are our lead learners and are not only critical for the success of our young people, they are also accountable for executing all aspects of a well-functioning organisation.

In 2007, Springboard Trust asked principals in South Auckland what business leaders could do to support schools in low-income areas to achieve better outcomes for students. Working with principals to deepen their understanding and use of strategic planning came to the fore. Starting with one cohort of six South Auckland principals, the Strategic Leadership for Principals’ Programme (SLPP) was born.

Today, Springboard Trust is privileged to have worked with over 224 principals in five regions through our SLPP and Alumni programmes, impacting 75,320 students.

Springboard Trust’s cross-sector model provides school leaders access to bespoke expertise across multiple functions that would otherwise not be available within New Zealand schools.

Unlike others working in the education sector, Springboard Trust is supported by people from the public and private sector who have a demonstrated track record in change leadership, strategic planning, stakeholder management and practical implementation.

These skills volunteers work closely with principals throughout our programmes, sharing essential practical skills, and offering support and advice, while being careful not to ‘impose’ their skills.

It’s simple. Helping school principals enhance their leadership capabilities will strengthen school performance.

Springboard Trust offers training and support in the areas of enhanced strategic leadership, planning and implementation, and encourages collaboration between principals and their communities.

Our programme produces more focused educational leaders who prioritise time for the highest-value initiatives to enhance children’s learning and improve educational outcomes.
